We witnessed the incredible launch of the James Webb space telescope on x-mas day, but what's next? Well, we are now right in the middle of what is called the thirty days of terror as we nervously await news about the progress of the James Webb Space Telescope.
It was already scary to see the $10 billion dollar telescope launch from French Guiana, but that was just the beginning. In the next month, hundreds of moving parts, including a giant sun-shield and two mirrors, will need to unfold properly on its month-long trip to its final destination, the Lagrange 2 point at 1.5 million kilometers from earth.
If everything goes according to plan, Webb will be able to detect light from the very first
galaxies and stars in our universe. Also, Webb will be able to look at the formation of new stars and planets and detect the atmospheres of exoplanets for signs of life beyond our solar system.
What an exciting time!
Wido.
