The James Webb Space Telescope has been shown to be capable of studying the atmospheres of extrasolar planets orbiting nearby white dwarf stars by a team of scientists funded by NASA. The team came up with a novel strategy that expands on a tried and true method called the IR excess method and would make use of Webb's Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI).
