As geopolitical tensions rise, the risk of nuclear conflict has become an increasingly alarming issue. A recent study published in Nature Food has highlighted the devastating consequences a nuclear war could have on global food supplies, in addition to the immediate destruction caused by radiation, heat, and blast effects. This report, based on simulations of the atmospheric and agricultural fallout of a nuclear war, reveals stark predictions: global food systems could be severely disrupted, leading to the starvation of 6.7 billion people worldwide.
Worldwide Starvation Threat and Agricultural Resilience
In the event of nuclear war, vast parts of the world’s most populous regions would face dire consequences. The study suggests that countries such as the United States, Canada, much of Europe, and Russia could experience widespread famine, with up to 98% of the U.S. population at risk of perishing from starvation. For instance, about 312.2 million people in the U.S. could die of hunger due to the destruction of agricultural systems and the collapse of international trade networks.

On the other hand, some countries, particularly in South America, Australia, and certain smaller regions, could weather the aftermath of a nuclear conflict more effectively. These nations have been identified for their ability to sustain ppopulations due to strong agricultural systems. Countries like Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay, Paraguay, Australia, Iceland, and Oman have been highlighted for their agricultural resilience. As the study notes, “Food consumption can support the current physical activity in that country,” making these nations more likely to support their populations despite the global food crisis.
