Dr Ajit Subramaniam was recently on board a 100-metre research ship, on an epic 55-day expedition across the equatorial Atlantic, uncovering the secret life of phytoplankton and the future of ocean health. This in-depth interview explores the critical role of oceanography in understanding climate change and its impact on food security, marine ecosystems and more.

Dr Subramaniam is a Lamont Research Professor at the Lamont Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University. He is an oceanographer with expertise in biogeochemical cycles, remote sensing, bio-optics, and phytoplankton physiology. He is interested in advancing our ability to observe the ocean and expand our understanding of how marine ecosystems work.

In this interview, we dive deep into:
• How phytoplankton regulate global CO2 and oxygen levels
• The dangers of marine heatwaves, ocean acidification, and rising seas
• Cutting-edge technologies like robotic floats, gliders, and AI-driven sensors
• India’s role in monitoring monsoons via equatorial moorings
• Breakthroughs in Marine Carbon Dioxide Removal (MCDR) as a nature-based climate solution

This interview is the seventh in the Columbia Knowledge Series, a partnership between The Free Press Journal and the Columbia Global Center, Mumbai.

The Columbia Global Center in Mumbai is one of 11 Global Centers established by Columbia University in cities around the world including Amman, Athens, Beijing, Istanbul, Nairobi, Paris, Rio, Santiago, Tel Aviv and Tunis.
