India is deepening oil ties with Nigeria as concerns rise over potential U.S. sanctions on Russian crude purchases under Donald Trump’s warnings. Last week, Indian Oil Corporation secured one million barrels of Nigeria’s Agbami crude for September delivery, while Bharat Petroleum made spot purchases and negotiated further shipments. India, the world’s third-largest oil importer, has been diversifying its sources in recent years, including supplies from Angola, the U.S., and West Asia. In early 2025, India was already Nigeria’s top crude customer, a role now expanding as both countries view steady deliveries as key to their long-term energy security and trade stability.
