Are we in the middle of a global food crisis?

Around a quarter of global wheat, barley, and corn exports come from Russia and Ukraine.

18% of fertilizer exports come from Russia and Belarus, which are both subject to economic sanctions.

Over a hundred ships are stranded in the seas around Ukraine, preventing exports from reaching the rest of the world, while the Ukrainian government has put a ban on some agricultural exports like wheat and oats.

Due to Ukraine's climate, there's also only a small window from March to May when many crops can be planted.

This has been heavily disrupted by the war, with many farmers not working, so exports will be affected in future years too.

A number of countries like Egypt, Turkey, and Lebanon get more than 60% of their wheat from Ukraine and Russia, but the rest of the world will be affected as well.

Grain and fertiliser are key in the production of many other foods.

For example, wheat is used to feed livestock in the UK, so a rise in price will have knock-on effects on other prices.

The U.N. estimates that the war could cause up to 13 million more people to go hungry.
